When you think of museums, huge, silent places come to mind, full of centuries-old paintings and thoughtful people strolling around. Sometimes they stop in front of you, sometimes they circle a sculpture as if they were a bird performing a mating ritual, and then move on to the next work.

Yes, and no. There are such museums and they are great, places full of art and artistic representations in many different ways, but how would you like to go to completely different museums?

Forget about looking at a Picasso painting, a Michelangelo sculpture or a Robert Capa photograph. We are going to show you the funniest, geekiest and most different museums in Budapest.

Different and Geeky Museums, Fun in Budapest

Museum of Sweets & Selfies (Szelfimúzeum) No.1: Origin

Paulay Ede u. 43, 1061

As the name of the museum says, this is all about selfies. If selfies, or at least photos, are not your thing, this may not be the place for you, but you will be able to enjoy some very original souvenir photos, even if you don’t upload them to social networks. But it is true that you will be able to enjoy some very original souvenir photos, even if you don’t upload them to the networks.

What are you going to find here? 400 square metres spread over two floors with eleven rooms totally themed and with the most unexpected elements that will make others look twice at the photo to make sure that… are those flamingos and unicorns? Is that pool full of pearls? Yes to everything.

The main objective is to have fun and make great memories.

Museum of Sweets & Selfies (Szelfimúzeum) No.2: Bubbles

Rákóczi út 40, 1072

If eleven rooms, 400 square metres and all the unicorns in the world weren’t enough for you, the guys at Sweets & Selfies have created more rooms with original ideas where you can continue to give free rein to your photos.

This great interactive museum brings us one of the biggest, and best, novelties on the market; a bar inside a pool of bubbles. Don’t try to understand it, the best thing to do is to go and try it because it’s a fun experience that you won’t find in many other places on the continent.

Budapest Pinball Museum (Flippermúzeum)

Radnóti Miklós u. 18, 1137

This museum delivers what it promises and it won’t disappoint. We could even say that it offers much more than it promises, because you won’t believe your eyes. If you were one of those who enjoyed many of your younger years playing Pinball machines, this is your first stop.

The Buda Castle, Heroes’ Square, the Parliament, the Fisherman’s Bastion are all fine, but if you really want to enjoy yourself like a child, this is the first place you should go.

To give you an idea, here are some facts and figures: 400 square metres that house a total of 130 Pinball machines with all the themes you can imagine. Here we recommend you leave your camera to one side, because you can play as many machines as you like. This is a real interactive museum.

Museum of Illusions Budapest

Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út 3, 1065

If there is one thing we are proving, it is that museums can be fun places, where you not only can, but should, touch everything, be part of what is on display and experience it all with all five senses.

And there is nothing better to test your senses than the Museum of Illusions Budapest, where nothing is what it seems, it will play with what you see, what you feel, what you hear and even with your balance. The hall of mirrors, the rotating corridor, everything, absolutely everything will make you have a great time laughing.

Travelling Galaxy Exhibition

Kecskeméti u. 5, 1053

If you are a Star Wars fan, this is your museum, this is your place. Even if you’re not, the Travelling Galaxy Exhibition’s collection of most of the episodes of the saga is simply spectacular.

High quality material and professional details. Life-size figures, photographs, miniatures, real objects that appeared in the films and even a lightsaber! The tour takes about an hour, and you’ll want to finish it so you can go in again. Plus, the friendliness of the people who work there make it an even better experience.

Amazing Metal Art Gallery

Dohány u. 30./A, 1074. Entrance through the entrance of BAZ Beer Bar.

To finish off our list we bring you a museum, or more specifically a gallery, which is the most original and different thing you’ve seen in a long time. To begin with, its location, it’s in a nightclub. You’re sure to love that.

Then its exhibition; metal figures made from recycled materials. Just as you hear it, 260 square metres full of Predator, Alien, Transformers and other figures that you will instantly recognise and are spectacular when seen up close.

You can touch them, take pictures with them and get as close as you want. You’ll be impressed and you’ll enjoy it like a child.
