Whether you’re a fan of trains, planes or cars or not, there’s a museum about transport for you. The reason is quite simple, their impact on society.

There are certain objects and habits in our routine that mark the society we live in, and knowing how we move is one of them. The evolution of a society can be measured in the means of transport they use.

So, if you want to discover how the Hungarian people have lived the last few decades and see how the way they understand their day-to-day lives has evolved, don’t miss these original and interesting museums.

Best Transport Museums in Budapest

Aeropark Budapest

BUD Nemzetközi Repülőtér, 1185

This place should be in every guidebook of museums you should visit. Not only for its history and what it teaches, but also for the originality and spectacularity of the place. Now you will understand why.

Forget about a closed museum with scale models of aeroplanes. We are talking about a huge, open-air, open-air place, with the exhibition of Hungarian aviation history in front of you.

Add to that experienced guides, a helicopter simulator and all the information you can imagine about this medium. Check their website for availability and their night tour, which we highly recommend.

Hungarian Railway Museum (Magyar Vasuttorteneti Park)

Tatai u. 95, 1142

As with the Aeropark Budapest museum, it’s not centrally located, but it’s well worth the trip. Be warned, though, it is closed during the winter months and usually reopens to the public in mid-spring. Visit their website for correct and up-to-date information.

Since the year 2000, you can enjoy the more than seventy thousand square metres where machines, carriages and other elements related to trains are exhibited. Witness the evolution of this transport and spend a fantastic day in a place that you will like much more than you can imagine. Its location is great for a day out in good weather.

Millennium Underground Museum

Budapest, Deák tér, metro station

Forget London, Paris or Berlin, the first underground railway of Europe was built and operated here in Budapest. It took place in 2 May 1896 and marked the beginning of a new era in public transport, which has been copied by the rest of the world.

It can be considered the evolution of the previous museum, but where you can also learn about the evolution of the city. Its growth goes hand in hand with the growth of its transport and vice versa.

Its location is perfect for a quick getaway, as it is only a five-minute walk from the impressive St. Stephen’s Basilica. Enjoy both permanent and temporary exhibits, where you’ll find original documents and artefacts from the period as well as models and real machinery.

Urban Public Transport Museum Szentendre

2000 Szentendre, Dózsa Gy. Street, suburban railway station

Our last stop is again away from the city centre, which is logical considering the amount of material on display. This museum was opened in 192 and exhibits the evolution of Budapest’s public transport.

This evolution responds to the rhythm of local life, and is a great reference to understand how times have changed. It has five exhibition halls and two display halls.
